Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy Wilson was youngest child of six. Nancy loved listening to the records of her father and his passion for music. When she was just 4years old, Nancy was aware that her future was as a singer. The talent she had developed was discovered when she sang in the choir of her church. At the age of 15, she won the talent show on T.V. and started appearing regularly in The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while still in High School. At nightclubs, she began working at age 15. When she graduated from high school, at the age of 17, Nancy was enrolled for a semester at the Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before going on to become professional as a musician. The first album she recorded was in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group was on tour with her between 1956 and 1958. As part of the group, Nancy released her first record on Dot Records. Cannonball Adderley urged her to move to New York in order to increase her fame. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in 1959. Within a short time she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in the year 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess Who? Her albums were a hit and Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. In the era of Adderley, Wilson began concentrating on R&B and then shifted her focus to torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped make her a star and her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. This performance helped her land a gig at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
