Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an ironworker and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the eldest of six children. Nancy grew up listening to the records of her father and his passion for music. When she was just four years old, she was certain that she was going to be a star in the singing world. The talent she developed was cultivated through her participation in the choir at church. At the age of 16 when she started appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. The same year, Nancy started to work at night clubs. Nancy was 17 when she finished high school. After attending Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for one semester, Nancy left to be a professional performer. In 1956, she made her first album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut record in the band's studio with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she relocate to New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959 she moved into The Big Town. After just a few days, Adderley's manager heard her singing and hired her.
