Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, an ironworker in Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. She was the daughter of Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest out of 6 siblings. Her father's love of music as well as the music he played in the family room were an enormous influence on Nancy at the age of a girl. As a young girl, she already had an idea of her identity and what she wanted to do. The church choir was instrumental in developing her talent. Her first album was with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 until 1958. As part of the group, Nancy released her first record on Dot Records. Cannonball advised her to make the move in New York and go to The Big Town to continue her career. Within a couple of weeks the manager of Adderley heard her singing and hired her. Her albums were a hit and Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B in favor of jazz and torch song. The performance led her to a spot at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
