Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson, a jazz performer and three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe on 20 February 1937 to Olden Wilson an ironworker who had been employed for a considerable time as housekeeper. Nancy Wilson was only baby of six. Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music her father enjoyed and loved playing at his home. At the age of 4, Nancy already knew her destiny was to be a singer. Her talents were developed by singing with the church choir. After winning a talent competition on television when she was 15, she started appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. The same year, Nancy began to perform in nightclubs. Nancy at the age of 17, graduated from high-school and matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to pursue a career as a musician. Her first recording was with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They toured from 1956 to 1958. Nancy released her debut recording through Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball Adderley urged her to travel into New York in order to advance her career. She went to The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Adderley's Agent heard her in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. Within one month after her arrival to New York, she was in the city. She made her recording debut in 1960 by releasing the single "Girls" after she signed an agreement with Capitol Records. Guess Who? Her albums were a hit and Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. She began by focusing on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to make her a star as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was recorded in 1963. The following year the release, she was being invited to New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
