Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the sixth of seven kids. The passion for music that her father had and his collection of records at home had a major influence on Nancy as a young girl. At just 4 years old, she was certain she would be a singer. Her talent developed due to her participation in the church choir. In high school when she started appearing often on Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. At nightclubs, she began performing at the age of 15. Nancy quit Central State University in Ohio after matriculating for an entire year. In 1956, she recorded her debut album along with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured together from 1956 through 1958. While in the group Nancy made her first recording with Dot Records. Cannonball told her she should move to New York and go to The Big Town to continue her career. Her agent heard her speak in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she signed. within a month after arriving at New York City. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records and in that same year she issued her first single. Guess Who I Saw today Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Under the direction of Cannonball Adderley Wilson's leadership, Wilson started focusing on R&B but soon shifted to torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to bring her to the forefront and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. The following year, she was invited to perform at New York's Coconut Grove, the most prestigious nightclub in America.
